What has evolved is an art form which is arguably a departure from the classic ascii emoticon in meaning. One could say these have more to do with one's "identity" than exclusively expressing emotion. Most commonly used in message boards to express both emotion/attitude and identity.
Basic keystrokes representing emotion or attitude. These are common in any two way communication. Message boards, AOL Instant Messenger, and many other chat communication programs.
